The Pirates played the Southern
Stars for the 3rd straight year in the Friday night quarterfinals and came away
with a tightly contested 2 to 1 win. Playing very tight defense,
Park
Center
limited Chaska to only 14 shots for
the game. The Stars took a 1 to 0 halftime lead on a deflected shot past Pirate
net minder junior Joel Phelps. Sophomore Jack Dougba scored twice early in the
second half, one on an assist from goalie Phelps to take a 2 to 1 lead. The
Park
Center
defense then took over and only
allowed Chaska 5 shots the rest of the way to seal the 2 to 1 victory. Phelps
had 13 saves in the Pirate win.

After being beaten twice very
soundly during the regular season, the Pirates put together their best
“team” effort of the year stopping
Anoka
4 to 1 to advance to the championship
game. Following the same game plan as the night before
Park
Center
controlled the game defensively and
kept the Mustangs bottled up in their own end most of the game. Anoka scored
first bouncing a deflected indirect kick past Phelps, But Dougba came right back
a minute later with a blast from mid-court that found the Anoka net on a pass
from junior Marie Norman to tie the score 1 to 1 at the half. Dougba opened the
second half with an unassisted goal 27 seconds into the 2nd half. The Pirate
defense then began to wear down the Mustangs and Dougba scored again at
8:10
on anther feed from
Norman
to open up a 3 to 1 lead. Park Centers
defense, led by sophomore Andy Brown, did not allow
Anoka
a shot on goal the last 10 minutes of
the game. Dougba then scored his 4th goal of the game at
1:46
to seal the win and a trip to the
championship game for the Pirates. Phelps again was rock solid in the nets with
15 saves.
State
Championship Game
Park Center 1, South Suburban 1 (
Park
Center
wins 1 to 0 in a shoot out)
After a 0 to 0 tie at halftime, Jack
Dougba opened the scoring for the Pirates blasting a direct kick threw the South
Suburban defense for a 1 to 0 lead at
19:20
to open the half. Again the Pirate
defense was very effective keeping the Jets bottled up in their end most of the
game. At
9:21
, South Suburban tied the score when a
shot that was going wide of the goal hit a
Park
Center
defender and went in the goal. Both
teams continued to play hard and the game ended tied at 1 to 1. The two teams
then played a 10 minute sudden death period in which the Pirates outshot the
Jets 5 to 1 but, neither team could find the back of the net. The championship
game then went into a shoot out with each team sending 4 shooters to the penalty
line. Injured senior
Park
Center
captain Billy Williams won the coin
toss and elected to go on defense first. Goalie Joel Phelps stopped all 4 South
Suburban shots and then Dougba blasted the first Pirate kick into the upper
right corner of the Jets net to give
Park
Center
their 2nd straight State Adapted
Soccer Championship 1 to 0 in an overtime shoot out. Dougba scored all 8 Pirates
goals in the tourney with Marie Norman getting 2 assists and goalie Joel Phelps
1. Phelps stopped 47 for 50 shots in the 3 game tourney with all 3 goals allowed
deflecting off other players.
Park
Center
set a new tournament defensive record
with allowing only 3 goals in the tourney.
